Slow cookers! Where would we be without them?
It’s a little hard to believe they’ve been around since the 1950s, don’t you think?
Back then, and now, they were known widely as crock-pots. And while slow cookers and crock-pots are technically slightly different, they both perform the same task – they slowly cook food at a low temperature over a long period of time.
This slow and steady process tenderises any meat in your meal and increases the flavours. It also uses less energy than using a hob or oven to make the same meal.
A wide variety of foods can be cooked in a slow cooker. They’re especially handy for making one-pot meals but you can also make soups, stews and casseroles and lasagne.
In fact, you can cook just about anything in a slow cooker! But, of course, there are some foods you should never cook in a slow cooker – dairy, rice and couscous are a few examples.
Who uses a slow cooker and why?
Millions of people use a slow cooker. They’re easy to use and you don’t have to stand over it.
You just prepare your ingredients according to the recipe, pop everything into the slow cooker, then leave to cook for a few hours (usually between 4 and 8).
While your evening meal is cooking nicely in the slow cooker, you can play with the kids, watch your latest binge-worthy boxset or crack on with your favourite hobby.
Hours later and hey presto, you’ve created a deliciously hearty, tasty meal!
Do slow cookers use much electricity?
Slow cookers are an extremely efficient way to prepare food. According to the npower website, a 3.5 litre slow cooker uses 21p worth of electricity to cook a meal. So, not only will you be free from standing over the cooker, you’ll be saving money too.
